Munshi Premchand's pen has magic, his pen has done the work
of describing in great detail all the social evils of India which are prevalent
in the villages and homes of India. In his writings, the atrocities on women,
atrocities on the poor and the cruelties present in the society have been
immortalized in a very poignant way on the pages of paper, which is visible. So, let's try to know something about
such a writer of India.
He was born on 31 July 1880 in Lamahi village of Varanasi district (Uttar Pradesh). He
belongs to a Kayastha family by caste. His mother's name was Anandi Devi and
father's name was Munshi Ajaib Rai. Premchand's father Ajaib Rai was a postman
in Lamahi by profession.
The real name of Munshi Premchand, the emperor of writing, or
his name before starting writing, was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava. Premchand
(Premchand) received his early education in Persian.
After that, Ramvilas Sharma writes about Premchand's parents
and other family life that - "When he was seven years old, his mother
died. When he was fifteen years old, he was married and when he was sixteen
years old, his father also died."
Munshi Premchand writes about his father on the decision of
his marriage that "Father stumbled in the last years of his life and not
only fell himself, but also drowned me and got me married without
thinking."
This is confirmed by Ram Vilas Sharma's statement that -
"The behavior of the stepmother, marriage in childhood, the rituals of the
priests, the miserable life of the farmers and clerks - Premchand had seen all
this at the age of sixteen.
Premchand was very interested in reading since childhood. At
the age of 13, he read Tilism-e-Hoshruba and he
gained knowledge from the novels of famous Urdu writers Ratan Nath 'Sharsaar',
Mirza Hadi Ruswa and Maulana Sharar.
Premchand has married twice. His first marriage took place at
the age of fifteen. In 1906, his second marriage took place with
Shivrani Devi, who was a child widow. She was a well-educated woman, who also
wrote some stories and a book titled Premchand Ghar Mein. They had three
children - Shripat Rai, Amrit Rai and Kamala Devi Srivastava.
Munshi Premchand, after passing the matriculation examination
in 1898, started working in a local school.
He was appointed as a teacher. He continued his studies along with his job.
Regarding his education, Ram Vilas Sharma writes that- "In 1910, he passed Intermediate with English, Philosophy, Persian
and History and in 1919, he completed BA with English,
Persian and History. After passing BA, he was appointed as Inspector in the
Education Department.
